Dune 2: Praised by Steven Spielberg as a Masterpiece of Science Fiction

Steven Spielberg lauded Denis Villeneuve for “Dune: Part Two” in a recent podcast. Spielberg called it a brilliant sci-fi film and commended Villeneuve’s talent in world-building, comparing him to cinema legends like Disney, Kubrick, and Lucas.

Villeneuve was honored by Spielberg’s praise, particularly for the scene where Paul rides a sandworm in the desert, which Spielberg hailed as a cinematic triumph. The movie showcases a unique take on the desert, turning it into a liquid-like landscape.

The sandworm riding scene in the movie was a complex feat, taking 44 days to shoot with a massive 90-foot-long set piece. Cinematographer Greig Fraser was initially skeptical but ensured the audience could immerse themselves in the story without disbelief.

“Dune: Part Two” has received critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing nearly $240 million domestically and over $570 million worldwide. The film is still being shown in theaters worldwide by Warner Bros.

You can hear the full conversation between Spielberg and Villeneuve on the DGA’s “Director’s Cut” podcast to delve deeper into their insightful discussion.
