Actor Hailey Gates directs debut film “Atropia” with producer Luca Guadagnino. The cast includes Callum Turner and Alia Shawkat.
“Atropia” is based on Gates’ 2019 short “Shako Mako,” a story of an actress working on a U.S. military training base simulating an Iraqi war zone.
The short “Shako Mako” is about a fake country invented by the American military for training exercises. It features an actress on a replica village on a U.S. military base.
Shawkat stars as the aspiring actress in the short, and Turner stars in Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air” and George Clooney’s “The Boys in the Boat.” Shawkat recently appeared in “Drift” and Disney+’s “The Old Man.”
