In Memoriam: Tim McGovern, Academy Award-Winning VFX Artist, Passes Away at 68
Visual effects veteran Tim McGovern, who won a Special Achievement Oscar for his work on the 1990 film “Total Recall,” passed away at the age of 68, as announced by his wife on social media.
McGovern was the CGI director for “Total Recall,” known for its groundbreaking visual effects, including the iconic X-ray security check scene featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The Visual Effects Society expressed sadness over Tim’s sudden death, praising his contributions to the field and his dedication to the organization.
Tim’s career began in the early days of digital VFX, working on films like “Tron” and later becoming a key member of Sony Pictures Imageworks.
In his recent years, McGovern worked at DNEG in Mumbai, contributing to various blockbuster films and serving as chief creative officer at Whisper Pictures.
Tim was honored with the Visual Effects Society Founders Award, becoming a VES Fellow and receiving Lifetime Membership for his significant contributions to the industry.
