Film “Dark Water” (2002)

Following up on his horror smash hits Ringu and Ringu 2, Hideo Nakata directs this supernatural psychological drama about a middle-aged woman struggling to cling to her sanity. Yoshimi Matsubara (Hitomi Kuroki) is in the midst of a nasty divorce with her thuggish, abusive husband over the custody of their five-year-old daughter Ikuko (Rio Kanno).

In Japan’s family court system, which heavily favors the mother, Yoshimi’s case would normally be easy. Unfortunately, she has a history of mental imbalance due to her difficult childhood. The transition to an independent working woman has been stressful, and she’s living in a rundown apartment. Ikuko and Yoshimi start seeing a creepy little girl dressed in yellow appearing in the apartment, creating a sense of dread.

Yoshimi starts having outbursts in family court and at her daughter’s kindergarten. After collapsing into a coma following one such episode, she realizes what the girl in yellow is trying to communicate.
