Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005)
In 2003, Paul Schrader was hired to direct a Prequel to The Exorcist. However, the producers found Schrader’s film not marketable. Instead, Renny Harlin’s more visually aggressive version, Exorcist: The Beginning, was released in 2004. Schrader’s film was later released in 2005.
In Schrader’s Exorcist: The Prequel, Father Lankester Merrin (played by Stellan Skarsgård) serves a flock in Holland during the Nazi occupation in 1944. Broken emotionally after a tragic event, Merrin takes a leave of absence. He later leads an archaeological project in East Africa with his crew, where they unearth a church from the fifth century.
As they uncover a porthole to evil in the church, a local boy, Cheche, begins exhibiting signs of possession. The film delves into the battle against Satanic forces that Merrin and his team must face.
