However, shortly after, Warner Bros. and DC Studios announced a new Superman actor would be taking over. David Corenswet was officially cast to play Superman in a film directed by James Gunn. Corenswet’s portrayal is expected to be “upbeat” and “optimistic,” a departure from Cavill’s darker take on the character.
Gunn emphasized the need for the new Superman to embody kindness and compassion while maintaining the essence of an alien superhero. The upcoming film, titled simply “Superman,” is set to hit theaters in June 2025. The decision to recast Superman came as part of a larger overhaul of the DC Universe on the big screen by Warner Bros. and DC Studios. Despite the change, Cavill remains appreciative of the opportunity to have portrayed Superman once again.
