Sony’s box office hit with the first movie didn’t prompt them to pursue the sequel. Another idea emerged post Heath Ledger’s passing, focusing on his character’s teenage daughter who wanted to joust. However, Netflix’s algorithm turned down the pitch.
Netflix seemed uninterested in a sequel without Ledger and tested the idea using algorithms. The streaming giant shows interest in creating franchises from older movies, as seen with Adam Sandler’s upcoming sequel.
