Czech surrealist filmmaker Jan Svankmajer debuted with Neco z Alenky, a dark take on a child’s mind, adapting Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Kristyna Kohoutová plays Alice, surrounded by strange clay, puppets, and meat characters. Falling asleep, Alice enters a bizarre world meeting unique creatures like the Caterpillar and The Mad Hatter. Released in 1988, the film was also known as Alice and nominated for an award at the 1989 Fantasporto Film Festival.
