“Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed” (1969) is a pivotal film in the Hammer series with a shocking twist early on. The transformation of doctor into monster is complete in this installment. Peter Cushing embodies the Baron with insanity and hatred, a departure from the sympathetic genius of previous films in the franchise. The plot revolves around brain transplants and manipulation. Director Terence Fisher’s skill shines through in the pacing and composition. Freddie Jones delivers a standout performance portraying a tormented character.
