(1972)

In 1972, Ralph Bakshi directed an X-rated animated feature, based on a popular underground comics character, against the objections of its creator Robert Crumb. The film follows Fritz, a feline college student in ’60s New York City, indulging in sex and drugs.

After a drug-induced hallucination causes a fatal incident, Fritz flees with a girlfriend, encountering a biker rabbit and terrorist radicals. It was considered a radical departure from traditional animation, despite Crumb’s opposition. A sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, followed in 1974.
