Film Princess Mononoke (1997)

Princess Mononoke (1997) is a $20 million animated adventure/fantasy film that quickly became the highest grossing Japanese film in history, making $150 million in Japan in its first seven months. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it’s set in the 14th century and showcases an ecology-themed epic battle between Animal Gods of the forest and humans during Japan’s Muromachi Period.

The story follows Young Ashitaka as he sets out to find a cure after being attacked by a demonic wild boar. Along the way, he encounters the rape of the Earth by a mining village, prompting the wrath of the Wolf God, Moro, and her human companion San.

Ashitaka seeks to bring peace between these opposing forces, but his efforts are thwarted by higher powers intent on killing the Shishigama, leading to a battle over the future of nature. The film received a PG13 rating and falls within the genres of action, adventure, fantasy, drama, and nature.
