Exploring the Unconventional: Kate Winslet’s ‘Lee’ Takes Center Stage in Roadside Attractions’ Vertical Buy

Roadside Attractions and Vertical have acquired U.S. distribution rights to “Lee,” a biopic about American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller that stars Oscar winner Kate Winslet.

The film is the feature directorial debut of Oscar-nominated cinematographer Ellen Kuras and has an impressive ensemble cast that includes Josh O’Connor, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Marion Cotillard. The release date for the film is set for September 20.

“Lee” debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and follows Miller’s personal and professional life during World War II. The script is penned by Liz Hannah, Marion Hume and John Collee with Winslet also serving as a producer alongside Kate Solomon.

Both Roadside Attractions and Vertical expressed their excitement and passion for bringing Lee Miller’s legacy to audiences worldwide. Kate Winslet’s depiction of the character in the film was highly praised by those involved in its release.

The companies have previously collaborated on film releases and have more projects in the pipeline, including the upcoming Sean Penn and Tye Sheridan drama “Asphalt City” and “Firebrand” starring Jude Law and Alicia Vikander.

The deal was negotiated by Cohen on behalf of Roadside Attraction; Vertical’s Jarowey, SVP of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi and CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group.

The film explores the most significant decade of Lee Miller’s life. As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and male artists’ muse. Lee Miller defied the expectations and rules of the time by traveling to Europe to report from the frontline during WWII. There, in part as a reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice to the voiceless. What she captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific. Her photographs of the war, its victims and its consequences remain among the most significant and historically important of the Second World War. She changed war photography forever, but Lee Miller paid an enormous personal price for what she witnessed and the stories she fought to tell.
