“The Color Purple,” the musical remake, will be available for streaming on Max starting Feb. 16. The movie stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, and Halle Bailey.
The film received critical acclaim and multiple award nominations, including an Academy Award nomination and 17 NAACP Image Award nods. It’s a remake of the 1985 Spielberg film based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning novel.
Director Blitz Bazawule collaborated with Spielberg, Quincy Jones, and Oprah Winfrey to update the material for the next generation. The film features songs from the Broadway musical adaptation, adding a new dimension to the story.
Fantasia Barrino, who portrays Celie, initially hesitated to reprise her Broadway role in the movie but eventually embraced the opportunity. Barrino highlighted the importance of not letting fear hold her back from portraying the character.
With a talented cast and a fresh take on the classic story, the streaming debut of “The Color Purple” on Max is not to be missed.
