Reflections on ‘Jack Reacher’ Box Office Failure: Director Defends Tom Cruise’s Height

Despite the success of Prime Video’s “Reacher” series, the 2012 film adaptation of “Jack Reacher,” featuring Tom Cruise, failed to impress. The 2016 sequel, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” led to the demise of the film franchise.

Edward Zwick, the director and co-writer of “Never Go Back,” acknowledged the underwhelming box office performance in his new memoir. He shared his attempt at a unique script that failed to resonate with audiences. Zwick also addressed the criticism surrounding Cruise’s physical stature compared to the character in the novels.

Zwick expressed his willingness to work with Cruise again and mentioned their previous collaboration on “The Last Samurai.”

The television adaptation of “Reacher” features Alan Ritchson, more closely resembling the physical description of the character in Lee Child’s book series.

For more insight into Zwick’s experiences in Hollywood, fans can explore his memoir, “Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood,” now available for purchase.
