Revitalizing Tradition: Pingyao Festival’s New Vision for Programming and Cultural Development

China’s Pingyao International Film Festival has revealed its new artistic director and foreign-language film programmers. Lin Xudong is the new artistic director, while Kamiya Naoki and Fukatsu Junko are the programmers for foreign-language films. Wu Jueren and Song Jia are the programmers for Chinese language films and short films respectively.

The announcements were made in Berlin where the festival’s executive committee was introduced. The committee includes well-known personalities from the film industry and aims to support five foreign film projects with completed scripts each year.

Lin Xudong, a chronicler of the New Chinese Documentary Film movement, has an extensive background in documentary film events and has been a jury member at numerous overseas film festivals. Kamiya and Fukatsu bring valuable experience from their work with Tokyo Filmex and Kino Films.

The Pingyao festival expressed their gratitude to Marco Mueller, the former artistic director, who stepped into a consultancy role after leading the festival from 2017 to 2021. Mueller has now moved on to lead the inaugural Asia-Europe Youth Film Festival in Macau.

The festival’s new leadership and programming team signal a fresh approach to cultural development and programming, continuing the festival’s tradition of supporting independent and innovative cinema, and promoting international collaboration and cultural exchange.
