A24’s Blockbuster ‘Civil War’ Soars Past $70 Million Worldwide

A24‘s political thriller “Civil War” is resonating not just in red states and blue but overseas, too.

Alex Garland’s film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist, has grossed $45.7 million in North America and $20 million internationally. Global ticket sales stand at $67.3 million through Monday, and it’s projected to cross $70 million on Tuesday.

“Civil War” is the first A24 movie to top the domestic box office, and it’s impressively remained the No. 1 film for two consecutive weekends. It wasn’t clear the film would resonate internationally given its U.S.-centric theme, but it has appealed to audiences globally.

After two weeks of release, “Civil War” is already one of the indie studio’s highest-grossing films, costing $50 million. The studio presold foreign rights to help recoup its investment. The film is directed by Alex Garland and stars Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, and Jesse Plemons.

Garland has previously directed films like “Annihilation” and “Ex Machina” and written “28 Days Later.” “Civil War” depicts a new Civil War breaking out between the U.S. government and the “Western Forces” led by California and Texas.

A24 will need substantial ticket sales to justify the movie’s high production cost. It has already fared well internationally, especially in the United Kingdom and other smaller markets. The film showcases a gripping narrative that has resonated with audiences across the globe.
