Academy Announces Split of Short Films and Feature Animation Branches Into Two Separate Entities

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has separated the Short Films and Feature Animation Branches into two distinct entities: the Animation Branch and the Short Films Branch.

The Animation Branch will have 700 members and two governor representatives overseeing animated feature film and short film awards.

The Short Films Branch, comprising over 200 members, will have one governor representative focusing on live action short films.

The change aims to accommodate the growing short films and animation communities within the Academy.

This move now gives the Academy a total of 19 branches representing various aspects of the film industry.

In 2023, a new Production and Technology Branch was established, with the Oscars introducing a casting award category for films released in 2025.

The 96th Oscars are scheduled for March 10, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the event at the Dolby Theater. Viewers can watch the ceremony live on ABC and in over 200 territories worldwide.
