Adult Film Destricted (2006) is a seven-episode omnibus picture helmed by avant-garde performance artists and provocateurs. It pays homage to classic porn while deconstructing the concepts of obscenity and voyeurism with extreme tonal variations on the sexual act.
The premier episode, “Hoist,” by artist Matthew Barney, depicts a bizarre mating ritual between a man with a giant cucumber for a penis and a deforesting Caterpillar truck. Richard Prince’s “House Call” re-shoots and re-dubs a classic hardcore sequence, while Marco Brambilla’s “Sync” splices together sex scenes from both hardcore and mainstream features.
Larry Clark’s “Impaled” features interviews with adolescent boys about their sexual fantasies and includes an unsimulated, hardcore sex scene. Sam Taylor-Wood’s “Death Valley” offers a voyeuristic glimpse of a man masturbating in the desert.
Marina Abramovic’s “Balkan Erotic Epic” provides a parody of ethnic sexual rituals, and Gaspar Noe’s “We Fuck Alone” depicts copulation between a man and an inflatable sex doll beneath a strobe light.
Despite its screening at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, Destricted skipped U.S. arthouse distribution and a mainstream American release, but it did receive a European theatrical run. The film is unrated by the MPAA and falls under the genre of Adult.
