Argylle Tops Box Office, but Still Fails to Impress

Argylle has opened at the domestic box office with $18 million. However, it is far from a hit. The brief appearance of Henry Cavill may have disappointed audiences. The movie received a “C+” CinemaScore, marking the second-worst weekend domestically of 2024, with a total of only $59.7 million.

Director Matthew Vaughn’s spy film may have managed to take the No. 1 spot domestically, but with a budget of $200 million, the $18 million opening hardly makes a dent.

The movie picked up another $17.3 million internationally, resulting in a global take of $35.3 million. However, with a budget of $200 million, the film remains $165 million in the red, not accounting for advertising costs.

The “C+” CinemaScore and the absence of Henry Cavill, despite his prominent role in the trailer, seem to have contributed to the disappointment of audiences. The convoluted storytelling and poor CGI also took their toll on viewers.

This poor performance is indicative of the general state of the box office for 2024, with last weekend’s domestic total being the second-worst of the year at $59.7 million.

Despite the disappointing performance of Argylle, other films continue to stand strong at the box office. The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 1-3 landed the No. 2 spot at the domestic box office, with $6 million this weekend, while The Beekeeper slipped to No. 3 with $5.3 million.
