Nikon revealed plans to acquire cinematography camera maker Red, expanding its presence in the professional digital cinema camera market. The deal details remain undisclosed. Nikon cited the acquisition as a means to drive product development and innovation in film and video production, utilizing both companies’ expertise.
Renowned cinematographers like Erik Messerschmidt, Robert Richardson, Cesar Charlone, and Jeff Cronenweth have utilized Red cameras in their award-winning projects. Recent films shot with Red cameras include “Griselda,” “Rebel Moon,” and the upcoming “Horizon: An American Saga.”
Red’s history dates back to 2007 with the introduction of the Red One 4K camera, known for its affordability compared to other models, appealing to indie filmmakers. Over the years, Red expanded its product range to include advanced systems like the V-Raptor camera with an 8K sensor, suitable for various filming formats.
Headquartered in California, Red, under the leadership of president Jarred Land, boasts a dedicated team of around 220 employees. The company, founded by Jim Jannard of Oakley, has garnered a loyal following in the industry for its innovative technology and image quality.
