China’s Box Office Dominance: ‘Godzilla X Kong’ shatters records with Hollywood’s biggest opening of the year. Legendary Entertainment’s film scored $44.6 million in mainland China. Nationwide, cinemas enjoyed $64.1 million of business this past weekend.
While the opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” was smaller than its predecessor, the film achieved the fourth-largest performance by a Hollywood title in the post-pandemic era. Imax reported that the film earned $7.5 million on its screens in China, a significant accomplishment.
“Kung Fu Panda 4” fell to second place in its second weekend, with earnings totaling $5.8 million. The film has a running total of $34.5 million after ten days in Chinese cinemas.
“Viva La Vida,” a Chinese film, made a successful return to cinemas after being pulled from release during the Lunar New Year holiday season. It earned $4.3 million over the weekend, with a cumulative total of $22.3 million.
Other films such as “The Pig, The Snake, and the Pigeon” and the French art-house film “Anatomy of a Fall” also made appearances on the Chinese box office charts, with earnings reported. Year-to-date box office in China has reached $2.32 billion, surpassing previous records.
