ReFrame and IMDbPro announced that 29 out of 100 popular films of 2023 have received the ReFrame “stamp” for gender equality. Some titles include “Barbie,” “Past Lives,” and more.

19 out of the top films in 2023 were directed by women, including nine by women of color. A significant increase in the hiring of women as visual effects supervisors was noted.

There was a decrease in lead roles for women from 2022 to 2023. Of the analyzed films, 37.9% released exclusively on streaming services received the stamp.

Films outside the top 100 but meeting the standards for the stamp were also acknowledged, including “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” and “The Color Purple.”

The ReFrame Stamp is awarded to films that have at least 50% of key roles filled by women or individuals of other underrepresented gender identities/expressions.
