Exploring the Afterlife: A Conversation with Gael García Bernal and Director Piero Messina about ‘Another End’

Gael García Bernal and Renate Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”) star as lovers caught in an unusual bind in Italian director Piero Messina’s unconventional sci-fi film “Another End,” which is competing in Berlin.

The film is set in a near-future where new technology exists that can put the consciousness of a dead person back into a living body. Bernal and Reinsve play the central characters, alongside Bérénice Bejo as Sal’s sister Ebe.

What attracted Bernal to the role was the philosophical journey it offered, challenging the question of life after death and the importance of the soul over the body.

To get Bernal on board, Messina reached out and they connected over a Zoom call. The chemistry between Bernal and Reinsve during rehearsals in Rome solidified the film’s potential, according to Messina.

Bernal praises Reinsve’s talent, bravery, and grace while noting the unique, subtle tone of the film. Messina and Bernal emphasize the love story aspect of “Another End,” with the sci-fi elements intentionally toned down.
