Exploring the Future of Filmmaking: A Conversation with Berlinale World Cinema Fund Chief Vincenzo Bugno at Bolzano Fest’s Maso Short Films Lab. Vincenzo Bugno, is behind a new program called Maso, dedicated to fostering the production of European shorts.

The shorts lab was launched in Bolzano, with a panel including Berlinale Shorts chief Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck and Torino Short Film Market’s Enrico Vannucci. Bugno explains the urge to foster the production of short films shot in South Tyrol that can travel worldwide.

When Bugno started working at the festival last year, he saw the unique film landscape in South Tyrol. Shorts are neglected in the industry, so they decided to create Maso as a local and international project.

Maso, named after a mountain farm, works towards redefining shorts. The lab involves eight director and producer teams from different European countries. It aims to nurture these short film projects over two years through workshops in various locations.

The first workshop will be in Norway by the end of this year, followed by another in Bolzano in 2025. Maso supports the full cycle of these short films, from development to distribution challenges. The goal is to premiere these films internationally and at the Bolzano festival.
