Film: The Unknown (1927)
Silent-movie collaboration between Tod Browning and Lon Chaney has notable moments. Chaney plays the “Armless Wonder” in a circus. Chaney’s assistant, Joan Crawford, fears touch. Chaney murders the circus manager, witnessed by Crawford, who saw his distinct thumb. To impress her, Chaney blackmails a doctor to amputate his arms, only to find out Crawford is no longer fearful and is drawn to the circus strongman. Enraged, Chaney plots revenge but faces a twist in the end.
