Inward Investment in U.K. Film and TV Plummets by 35% Amidst Strikes

The U.K.’s film and TV industry suffered a 35% drop in inward investment, amounting to £4.23 billion. Inward spend on high-end TV shows contributed £2.9 billion. Feature production accounted for 33% (£1.36 billion) of the total spend, with 77% coming from inward investment.

The producers body Pact raised concerns about the U.K.’s indie film sector facing market failure. The highest-grossing indie film, “The Great Escaper,” made £5.31 million, while “Barbie” grossed £95.6 million in 2023.

In TV, 71% (£1.91 billion) came from inward investment, while U.K. domestic shows accounted for 28% (£755 million). The BFI’s report highlighted a 19% increase in high-end U.K. shows year-on-year, along with an incremental recovery in box office takings, increasing by 4% to £985.8 million.

BFI CEO Ben Roberts emphasized the industry’s significant econonic contribution despite challenges. He also noted the importance of supporting lower-budget U.K. films.
