Jonathan Glazer Reflects on the Significance of Filming ‘The Zone of Interest’ at Auschwitz

Jonathan Glazer reflects on the significance of filming ‘The Zone of Interest’ at Auschwitz. He returned to the memorial and museum, where he shot parts of his acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film, for the Polish premiere.

He explained the importance of being allowed inside the museum to shoot the film, emphasizing the need for it to feel present tense, blurring the lines between past and present, here and there.

Glazer emphasized the film’s aim to show the ongoing relevance of Auschwitz in today’s world and our human capacity for violence. The movie juxtaposes Rudolf Höss’s family life with the backdrop of history’s darkest chapter.

Piotr Cywiński, the museum director, praised the film’s authenticity and sensitivity, crediting the trust and collaboration between the team and the museum for reaching a level far unreached by many filmmakers in the past.
