Oscars Break New Ground by Introducing Best Casting Category for 2026 Awards

The Oscars are embracing change with the introduction of a new competitive category for best achievement in casting. This category is set to begin at the 98th annual ceremony for films released in 2025, marking the first new category created by the Academy since 2001.

The Casting Directors Branch, formed in 2013, has nearly 160 members. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang highlighted the essential role casting directors play in filmmaking, expressing pride in adding casting to the recognized disciplines.

Acknowledging the casting directors’ exceptional talents and dedicated efforts, the Academy Casting Director Branch governors expressed gratitude for the support received. This achievement is a testament to the persistent advocacy for recognition within the industry.

The recognition of casting directors has been a long-standing endeavor, dating back to the late 1990s. Although there were previous attempts to add this category to the Oscars, widespread support was lacking at the time, preventing its realization.

Discussions have also surfaced about the possibility of adding a category for stunts, garnering significant support within Hollywood. In March 2023, the Academy established the Production and Technology Branch, incorporating key technical and production positions in all phases of filmmaking.

This shift towards inclusivity and recognition of diverse roles within the industry indicates the Academy’s commitment to evolving and celebrating all facets of film production. The 96th Oscars are slated to be held on Sunday, March 10th, marking another significant milestone in the world of film.
