Remembering Sam Mercer: A Legendary Producer in Hollywood

Sam Mercer, producer on M. Night Shyamalan movies and former head of ILM, passed away in South Pasadena at 69.

Raised in Weston, Mass., he worked on classics like “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” Then he joined Disney and Hollywood Pictures, overseeing hits like “Quiz Show.”

As an independent producer, Mercer delivered films like “Congo” and teamed up with Shyamalan on projects like “Signs” and “The Village.”

He had credits on various movies and in 2015 took on a leadership role at Disney/Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic.

Mercer was known for his kindness and ability to create a family atmosphere on set – traits that left a mark on all who worked with him.

His final project was “Concrete Cowboy” and he is survived by his children and wife.

A memorial will be held in the spring for this influential figure in the film industry.
