Rust Armorer’s Quest for Justice: Seeking a New Trial and Release from Jail

Attorneys for “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed seek a new trial and her release, based on a recent New Mexico Supreme Court ruling.

Gutierrez Reed faces up to 18 months for negligence in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Her attorneys cite jury instruction issues as grounds for a new trial.

A recent Supreme Court ruling overturned a case due to confusing jury instructions involving “and/or” conjunctions.

Gutierrez Reed’s attorneys argue that this ruling indicates a new trial is likely for their client. They are pushing for her release during the appeal process.

Prosecutor Kari Morrissey declined to comment on the case. Alec Baldwin’s lawyers are also challenging jury instructions for his upcoming trial.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the former armorer on the set of the movie Rust, listens to Corporal Alexandra Hancock, with the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office, testify during her trial at district court on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2024.
