The Wave: Sebastián Lelio’s Empowering Musical Tribute to Chilean Feminist Protests

“The Wave” is a musical tribute to Chilean feminist protests directed by Sebastián Lelio. The film revolves around a music student, Julia, who becomes a key figure in the feminist movement on her university campus.

Lelio uses the musical genre to highlight the young feminist movement in Chile and the power of individual and collective voices. The movie explores the clash between the need for change and societal resistance through dance, music, and a group of determined masked women.

Produced by Fabula and Participant, “The Wave” features original music by 17 female Chilean musicians, as well as the work of composer Matthew Herbert and choreographer Ryan Heffington.

The film aims to showcase the journey of Latin American feminists and evoke inspiration and emotion in the audience. Co-screenwriter Manuela Infante drew inspiration from real-life experiences during the feminist uprising at a university in Chile.

Sebastián Lelio’s previous successes include the Oscar-winning “A Fantastic Woman” and the acclaimed films “The Wonder” and “Gloria.” The production of “The Wave” took place over nine weeks in Chile.
