Unionized Crews Advocate for Improved Pension and Health Benefits in Initial Bargaining Talks with IATSE

Unionized crews are pushing for pension and health benefits in talks with IATSE and Hollywood Basic Crafts unions. Negotiations started with proposals on these crucial items, following a rally where union leaders emphasized the importance of reaching a deal by the July 31 deadline.

The talks began with an extensive delegation present to bargain with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. A media blackout has been put in place during negotiations to prevent the specifics of the proposals from being shared with the press.

IATSE is collaborating with Teamsters Local 399 and other Basic Crafts unions to address issues concerning the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plans. One of the key demands is a new streaming residual to increase employer contributions into the plans, which was sought in previous negotiations but not achieved.

The pension and health plans are facing significant challenges due to last year’s extended strike, which halted the scripted side of the industry for six months. Talks are ongoing, with the unions updating members that discussions on the shared MPI benefit plans are expected to continue throughout the week.

The bargaining process will progress slowly, starting with negotiations on the Basic Agreement affecting 13 West Coast locals, followed by the Area Standards Agreement for other locals nationwide in late April. Teamsters Local 399 will address their specific issues in June. The unions have made it clear they will not extend contracts beyond the expiration date.

IATSE, the Teamsters and the Hollywood Basic Crafts rallied members on March 3, 2024, one day before bargaining began on a new three year contract.
